IoT and sustainability are broad subjects, offering plenty of opportunities for technology innovation and creativity. So, for this hackathon, we have kept the boundaries small to make sure the ideas are big! The requirement is to propose projects that address one or more environmental challenges we face across the globe today using Project AIR.
From enhancing energy efficiency and reducing global emissions to making cities “smarter,” the Internet of Things (IoT) and sustainability are natural partners, so please focus your submissions on this combination. Be creative, and remember that while submissions can target suggestions such as those that follow, you can also propose other ideas; these are just a few thoughts to get you going.

As our global population continues to grow, so does the demand for energy, which is why using renewable energy and optimizing natural resources related to energy production are more important than ever. When it comes to energy, IoT can play a pivotal role in optimizing energy use, increasing visibility, and understanding operational data at the edge.
How can we harness technology to ensure energy supply keeps up with demand? Perhaps remote monitoring apps focused on optimizing renewable energy production in real time? Or smart grid apps that use edge analytics to maximize the use of energy supplies while improving resilience and reducing operational costs? We want to hear your ideas!
The health of our water supply is quickly becoming a critical issue, especially as it relates to humankind’s socio-economic development and prosperity. Overpopulated cities around the world continue to deplete major water reservoirs, and industrial waste and sewage continue to contaminate the water supply of millions of people.
How can edge analytics help solve this urgent issue? How about using edge devices and sensors to gather critical data from devices deployed in irrigation systems and water treatment plants? Or, could IoT modernize water management systems, optimize water consumption, and minimize waste in smart buildings and irrigation systems?
Vast resources are required to produce food, which makes it critical to develop sustainable food production techniques that can handle global demand now and in the future. Reducing the current resource footprint in the food industry has also become a major priority for most countries.
Could smart farming apps that use real-time soil condition data be valuable? Or, perhaps wireless IoT sensors could provide enhanced visibility into the food processing supply chain, with real-time alerting capabilities for immediate mitigation of issues? What solutions would you suggest to keep our growing world responsibly and sustainably fed?
Pollution has serious ramifications for the global climate, water quality, extreme weather, renewable energy, food production, and vegetation preservation. In some countries, pollution has reached alarming levels that put entire ecosystems and the prosperity of entire geographical regions in jeopardy.
What role can edge analytics play in addressing this crisis? How could smart waste management apps improve waste collection, reduce garbage on the street, and prevent illegal trash dumping? Or, perhaps monitoring apps that leverage innovations in low-cost pollution sensors might be part of the solution? Please share your best ideas with us!
The transportation industry is one of the main contributors to the world’s overall carbon footprint. The better we operate large transportation and supply chain networks, the lower the carbon footprint.
How could IoT monitoring apps be used to help cargo companies optimize routes and shipments to minimize fuel consumption? Could we use fleet management optimization apps that measure selected environmental factors to improve fleet-related decisions? What could we do with IoT sensors to improve driving behaviors and ensure timely vehicle maintenance? What ideas excite you for facilitating sustainable transportation?
