Overview

Innovation is in Flipkart's DNA since it was first launched in 2007, and has played a significant role in making Flipkart India's largest e-commerce company today. In its tenth year of innovating for India, Flipkart wants its hometown Bengaluru to put behind its reputation for being a congested, traffic-choked city. And the best way to do it is ask the people who navigate the city's treacherous traffic.

During the ‘Month of Innovation’, part of Big10, Flipkart’s 10th anniversary celebrations, Flipkart is conducting ‘Gridlock Hackathon’ - a hackathon to crowdsource innovative, implementable ideas that could help ease the traffic situation in the city.

Phase 1: Online submissions

In phase 1, participants need to register for the hackathon, form their teams and submit their entries.

Entries should be in the following format:

A ppt of maximum 8 slides.

  • 1 slide - context/scope
  • 1 slide - problem description
  • 2-3 slides - analysis/research on why problem exists
  • 2-3 slides - proposed solution
  • 1 slide - Links to all supporting documents including code repositories (github link preferred) and instructions on how to execute the code.
  • Demo video (optional)

Participants may either
i) upload a zip file/folder of the PPT/video
ii) upload the PPT/video to a google drive and share the link

Phase 2: Final Demo

The top entries will be shortlisted based on the judging criteria. Shortlisted participants will then have to do a demo in front of the jury for 10 minutes on July 8th.

Submission Criteria:

Interested participants may submit proposals that address macro problems like overall traffic in Bengaluru or traffic snares in specific areas like Silk Board, KR Puram etc. Solutions can be entirely technology centric or may partially leverage technology in relevant and smart ways, to address problems related to Bengaluru Traffic.

Judging Criteria:

All entries will be judged on following parameters:

  • Impact: How big is the problem being addressed and how relevant is the solution
  • Feasibility: is the solution implementable in the face of real world challenges
  • Scalability & Sustainability: is the solution long lasting and will it scale for the real world, possibly through relevant application of technology
  • Completeness: we are looking for a working prototype, a demo-able proof of concept

Themes

Bengaluru’s traffic problem

Also called India’s Silicon Valley, or India’s Startup Capital, Bengaluru is world-renowned for being a hub of innovation, cutting-edge research and great tech talent. But Bengaluru also carries the tag of being India’s third-most populous city, having enjoyed for decades a preferred status among students, job-seekers and global companies. The population influx, combined with rising aspirations and inadequate infrastructure, has however made Bengaluru burst at the seams, giving rise to a perennial problem: Traffic Gridlock.

As an innovative tech-company born in Bengaluru, which firmly believes that all new innovation should benefit society at large, Flipkart is bringing together the tech community and concerned citizens in the city to try and find solutions to fix Bengaluru’s traffic problem.

Data:
Participants may also use any public api like google maps api etc.
Participants may also come up with their own databases / use dummy data sets to simulate traffic conditions.
